Introduction

Pancreatic cancer remains one of the most lethal malignancies despite modern advances in anti-cancer treatment. Most patients are diagnosed at an inoperable, locally advanced or metastatic stage. Clinical response to conventional treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy is suboptimal and the disease carries poor prognosis and survival. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is an anti-cancer treatment modality that is relatively new compared with conventional treatments. Over the past decade, numerous clinical studies have proven the feasibility, safety as well as efficacy of HIFU in treating a number of abdominal and pelvic neoplastic diseases, including pancreatic cancer. We here report a case of excellent clinical outcome in a patient with locally advanced, inoperable pancreatic adenocarcinoma who was treated using HIFU concurrent with combination chemotherapy. Clinical data on the use of HIFU in treating pancreatic cancer will also be thoroughly reviewed.
